The First Tee Wins National Event

For Immediate Release: October 28, 2009

Pine Mountain, GA — The First Tee of Massachusetts continues to shine in the national spotlight. A four-player team consisting of Liz LaVerghetta, Cora Bernier, Trevor Bernier, and John Beadle were recently crowned champions of the 7th Annual Golf Channel Invitational for The First Tee.

Contested annually, The Invitational allows The First Tee chapters from around the country to compete against each other in a spirited golf competition. The Invitational provides an opportunity for youth from The First Tee chapters to mix with business executives from across North America and to share with these executives their experiences and the positive impact that The First Tee has on their lives.

This year’s event was contested at the beautiful Callaway Gardens located in Pine Mountain, Georgia. Played out on the Mountain View Course, the former home to the PGA Tour’s Buick Challenge, TFT participants competed in an 18 hole team stroke play event. The First Tee of Massachusetts posted an eight-shot victory during the Shell Chapter Challenge on Sunday October 25th.

“The whole weekend was an absolute thrill,” said John Beadle (Attleboro, MA). “It was great to be the champions and to be able to play as a team, but it was also a lot of fun to meet a lot of great kids from other First Tee chapters around the country.”

On Monday (10/26) the junior golfers from all of the participating chapters took part in the annual Pro-Am and were paired with the corporate sponsors for an 18 hole tournament. Each participant joined a foursome of CEO’s, business executives and The First Tee personnel for a day of golf and fun.

Liz LaVerghetta, whose 2009 year also included a trip to The First Tee Life Skills & Leadership Academy at the University of Oregon, echoed the thoughts of her teammates regarding the Pro-Am. “Getting to play in the Pro-Am portion of the event was a lot of fun. To be able to meet and play golf with so many supporters of The First Tee was a really memorable experience. The whole weekend was special and something that I will remember for a long time.”
